Strategic tech vendor selection tips from CRO veterans

In the world of clinical trials, Contract Research Organizations (CROs) are under pressure to deliver quality data, meet deadlines, and stay within the budget. A large part of this depends on selecting the right technology solutions that meet the sponsor’s study needs and set the stage for long-term success.

In a recent webinar, veteran CRO experts Rachel Furnish, senior director of clinical systems at Worldwide Clinical Trials, Melissa Hancock, director of eClinical technologies at Aperio Clinical Outcomes, and Alan Morton, director of vendor management at PSI, shared valuable insights on the pivotal role that technology vendors play in supporting CROs to win bids, how to guide sponsors in selecting the right technology stack, and best practices to drive successful clinical trials.

Identifying the right technology for the study

As the landscape of clinical trial technology continually evolves, CROs are challenged to stay informed about the myriad of available technologies that may align with each studys requirements. To help sponsors cut through the noise and more easily select the best technology for the study, consider these factors:

  • Look at costs and functionality: By assessing cost-effectiveness, long-term functionality, and impact on study teams, CROs can offer sponsors a strategic approach to technology selection to maximize study quality and efficiency.

  • Consider a technology ecosystem approach: Whether dealing with Direct-to-Patient (DtP) studies or traditional trials, CROs can rely on their vendors to help sponsors navigate the best-fit technologies for their specific purposes. Avoiding over-engineering solutions and ensuring that technologies align with compliance regulations can help meet project timelines.

  • Striking the right balance with integrations: Integrations should serve a purpose, enhancing data collection and reporting efficiency without introducing unnecessary complexities.

  • Choose partners, not vendors: The best vendors are those who are invested in their CRO partners’ and sponsors’ success. They can be an invaluable resource and sounding board to sift through what technologies are most supportive for specific study needs.

Successful collaborations: winning bids with vendor support

Education is a powerful tool. CROs and their vendor partners play an important role in advising sponsors on the technology needs for specific study designs, and the solutions that have the features, functionality, and support they need. The best technology vendors can guide CROs and their sponsor clients on the capabilities of their technology, its appropriate use, and the potential limitations, as well as providing ongoing support and collaboration. This knowledge can empower CROs to propose technologies confidently to their clients, showcasing long-term benefits and cost-effectiveness.

The crux of successfully navigating the clinical trial technology landscape lies in thoughtful vendor partnerships. Technology vendors who act as true partners can help CROs understand the intricacies of study needs and offer thoughtful advice on the most fitting technology solutions. The right vendor goes beyond providing a service; they become an invaluable ally in the trial process.
